Through the Years

Volume 44

January 2021

Number 1

Beloved:

It was the Spring (March 27, 1957 to be exact) of my first year in Seminary that I heard Dr. Oswald J. Smith. Dr. Smith was preaching in the First Annual World Missions Conference at the Carrollton Presbyterian Church in New Orleans. In our class on World Missions at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, we were told we needed to hear this man.

Dr. Smith was Pastor of the Peoples Church of Toronto, Canada and one of the greatest Missionary Statesmen of the 20th Century. His church personally supported 350 Missionaries. He was known for his use of Missionary Mottos and the Faith Promise Giving Plan for World Missions. In fact, he used as the title of his Message, the night I heard him preach, his most famous Missionary Motto... "Why should anyone hear the gospel twice before everyone has heard it once?"

I stated all the above to say that, THROUGH THE YEARS there were Mottos that have BLESSED my Life and Ministry. Here are just a few:

(1)  "For the Word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done in truth" (Psalm 33:4).

(2) "The will of God will never lead you where the Grace of God will not sustain you."

(3) "The knowing plus the doing of the Will of God equals life."

(4) "Little is much if God is in it and Much is Little if God is not in it."

(5) "The Flesh (human nature apart from God) has a one-word vocabulary... MORE!"

(6) "Rules without Relationship lead to Rebellion!"

(7)  "He who does what He pleases is never pleased with what he does!"

(8)  "Proper preparation prevents poor performance."

(9)  "For of Him and through Him, and to Him are all things: to whom be Glory for ever. Amen" (Romans 11:36).

Please know we LOVE you in our blessed Lord Jesus!
